Bringing a pet overseas

This is my post specific to The Netherlands. I have a cat about 10 years old and the steps to bring him abroad so far is to go to a certified veterinary that deals with European travel for animals. We went in January of 2016 and the 1st steps are to microchip and obtain a rabies shot. The cost was as follows for my vet:
$70 (office visit)
$25 (vaccine)
$60 (microchip)

It may be a lot but if you love your pet you will do it. I can’t imagine him put in a shelter or put down. My cat is a part of the family and he is looking forward to the move.  So the next steps are to get quotes on transport. That is variable depending on who you go with. Aer Lingus was about $2500 and then KLM was $250. Yea big difference. I already have flown with both so its not going to be hard who to choose. Aer Lingus uses an outside agency and your cat will be below the plane and then KLM you can buy a soft carrier and then slide your little one under the chair. Direct flight is 7 hours and I am slowly helping my cat get use to it. Do not get any sleep meds or relaxation pills. It isn’t safe.

So before you go you will need to book a last appointment with the vet 10 days before your trip. Your pet will get a letter of good health and then they submit to the USDA for processing of your travel documents. The US doesn’t have what is called a pet passport. They have a similar document. It takes 1 to 2 days processing from the vets office once it is done. I know they fedex/overnight the documents. Hopefully I will update you how it goes.
